Welcome, fellow otaku’s, to How Anime Stuff Works and a recap of a new anime, today I’ll be reviewing the second episode to Kimetsu no Yaiba (Demon Slayer), I am excited to see where this episode will take me and what adventures lay in store for Tanjiro and Nezuko.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Kimetsu no Yaiba, Episode 2 now streaming on Netflix and Crunchyroll.
This episode of Kimetsu no Yaiba starts off with Tanjiro heading for Mt Sagiri with Nezuko, on the way there, Tanjiro buys a straw basket for Nezuko to travel in easily while keeping her out of the sun.

Tanjiro soon catches the scent of blood coming from a temple. He enters, thinking someone could be hurt and would need help, but discovers a man-eating demon.
The demon then attacks Tanjiro while Nezuko stares at the dead human bodies, she then turns away, runs towards the demon and kicks his head off, but the demon’s head and body starts attacking Tanjiro and Nezuko, After disabling the head Tanjiro pursues Nezuko and knocks the demon body off a cliff, thus killing the body.

An old man then appears and prevents Tanjiro from stabbing the pinned head, as that is not enough to kill it, but Tanjiro struggles to smash the demons head with a rock, the old man notices and thinks that Tanjiro is too sentimental and won’t cut it in being a demon slayer.
The old man turns out to be Sakonji Urokodaki, the person that Tanjiro was told to seek out by Giyu.

The sun rises and vaporizes the demons head causing Urokodaki to berate Tanjiro for his hesitation to smash it, stating that he’s resolve is weak. Urokodaki warns Tanjiro that letting Nezuko kill an innocent is the worst possible thing and then tests him to see if he is fit to be a member of the Demon Slayers Corps.
After going for a long run, he has Tanjiro leave Nezuko in a cabin and climb the mountain and tells Tanjiro to make it down before sunrise. The catch is that the mountain is booby trapped, with some of the traps being hard to detect.
Tanjiro uses his sense of smell to detect the booby traps as they have the scent of the person that laid them, letting him return in time before sunrise.

This causes Urokodaki to recall the letter he received from Giyu about the siblings and Giyu’s request that he train them. Urokodaki then accepts Tanjiro as his student.
My Opinion.
This episode really delves into Tanjiro’s character, showing that he tries to find some humanity even in a demon, I don’t know if this is because of Nezuko having some sort of humanity left within her even though she’s a demon that lead him to think like that but it’s pretty interesting to see this even if it does come across as a weakness.
What is also interesting in this episode is that the demon that Tanjiro and Nezuko encountered does speak and is in full control of his mind and body, he willingly chose to kill the people at the shrine which shows that the demons are able to control themselves and who the want to kill.
Also what is interesting is that this demon can speak, where Nezuko is mute, it makes me wonder why Nezuko doesn’t talk at all. Could it be caused by the trauma of seeing her family get killed in front of her caused her to go mute? or is it something that she lost when she transformed into a demon? It’ll be interesting to find out why Nezuko doesn’t talk at all!
What also caught my attention is that Nezuko could have eaten the bodies that the demon left in the shrine but it looked like she forced herself not too. It shows that even Nezuko has some sort of control over her actions and decisions, maybe as a demon she can control herself but for how long?
All in all this episode really answered some questions while leading to other questions that need to be answered. It was a pretty enjoyable episode and quite fun to watch, the animation was still solid, I adore the smoothness of it all!
